Matt Berninger, lead singer of The National, and artist Ragnar Kjartansson will present the six-hour performance film A Lot of Sorrow at Tabakalera, from 11:00 to 11:30. The presentation will be held in English, without translation. Afterwards, from 11:30 onwards, the audiovisual work will be screened in its entirety.
A Lot of Sorrow is a six-hour performance film in which The National repeatedly perform “Sorrow”, a three-and-a-half-minute ballad. As fatigue sets in, subtle shifts in tempo, tone and performance reveal the song’s emotional flexibility and expressive power. Kjartansson occasionally appears on stage in a supporting role, offering the musicians food and water. The camera’s shifting perspectives capture the exchange of energy between the performers and the audience, combining pathos, humour, endurance and a shared emotional experience.
AB100 is a gathering dedicated to music, visual arts and collective creation, conceived to celebrate musicians Aaron and Bryce Dessner’s 50th birthdays. Bringing together artists, writers and collaborators whose paths have crossed over the years, the programme will unfold across Donostia / San Sebastián and Biarritz, celebrating friendship, artistic exchange and shared creative processes.
Throughout the weekend, concerts, performances, gatherings and visual arts projects will take place at different venues across both cities. Tabakalera joins the programme with a screening of Ragnar Kjartansson’s A Lot of Sorrow, a six-hour performance film featuring The National, and Voices Within, an installation of sound sculptures by Ludmilla Balkis created in collaboration with Bryce Dessner and Julien Chaillou.
