The Noise Around: Tsai Ming-Liang’s Bittersweet Intimate Odysseys

For three decades, Tsai Ming-liang has been encouraging us to rethink our relationship with the spaces we inhabit, questioning architectural brutality and the barriers that separate us from those close to us. The big city is portrayed as a mystery that alienates but also fascinates, and the tiny flats inhabited by his characters are depicted as microcosms permeable to torrents of water, melodies from the past and overwhelming emotions.

The protagonists of his films, consistently portrayed by Lee Kang-Sheng – whom we have seen evolve from a taciturn young man into a mature man capable of embodying the deepest spirituality – are wanderers without a specific destination, enveloped in a melancholic perplexity that the viewer also experiences.

A perfect example of this, the 1994 Venice Golden Lion winner, Vive l’amour, cemented Tsai’s reputation as a master of the contemplative romantic comedy. Three characters survive despite their emotional shortcomings and an insurmountable sense of emptiness in a noisy and overwhelming Taipei. The filmmaker employs an extremely precise directorial style, capturing the encounters and misunderstandings of his characters with a subtle (heterosexual and homosexual) erotic undertone and a distinctive sense of humour that would come to characterise his entire filmography.

The Taste of Watermelon (2005) took the musical comedy to new heights with the story of a woman who falls in love with her neighbour, unaware that he is a porn actor filming a movie several floors above her. The film uses a brutal drought ravaging Taiwan as a symbol of the craving for stimulation that grips its citizens, creating a dazzling portrait of human pleasures.

Stray Dogs, winner of the Grand Jury Prize at Venice in 2013, is once again set in Taipei, its streets choked with traffic and an abandoned building – a hostile, nocturnal landscape through which a defeated man and his two young children wander. The ghost of the mother—a presence that is at once hopeful and nostalgic—appears and fades throughout this film about the inescapable state of helplessness that follows loss. Javier H. Estrada is a film critic, lecturer and programmer. He holds a Master of Arts in the History of Film and Visual Media (Birkbeck College, University of London).

He is currently co-director of SEMINCI – Valladolid International Film Festival. Previously, he was head of programming at the Seville European Film Festival, co-founder and head of programming at FILMADRID, and a member of the selection committee for DocumentaMadrid and the Oberhausen International Short Film Festival.

He is a member of the editorial board of the magazine Caimán. Cuadernos de cine, and has published articles in various media outlets, including the newspapers El Confidencial and El Español, and the magazines El Cultural and Archivos de la Filmoteca. He has also contributed to numerous books.

He is a lecturer at Camilo José Cela University (Madrid) and at ECAM, the Madrid Regional Government’s School of Cinematography and Audiovisual Arts.

Albertina Carri is an essential figure in contemporary Latin American cinema, standing out for her versatility across the different genres and subjects she addresses. As director of the films No quiero volver a casa, Los rubios, Géminis, La rabia, Cuatreros, Las hijas del fuego y ¡Caigan las rosas blancas!, she has been featured at festivals including Cannes, Berlin, Toronto, Venice, San Sebastian, Havana, Rotterdam, and many more besides. Carri's work undergoes a progressive transformation as her themes, resources and media take shape. She thus reorganises filmic materials, diving into the potential of sound and movement in audiovisual installations, examples of which would include Cine puro, Punto impropio and Animales puros. Her output likewise incorporates writing, in both poetry and prose, having published Los rubios: Cartografía de una película, Retratos ciegos, Lo que aprendí de las bestias, Las posesas and Cine vivo.

Javier H. Estrada is a film critic, lecturer and programmer. He holds a Master of Arts in the History of Film and Visual Media (Birkbeck College, University of London).

He is currently co-director of SEMINCI – Valladolid International Film Festival. Previously, he was head of programming at the Seville European Film Festival, co-founder and head of programming at FILMADRID, and a member of the selection committee for DocumentaMadrid and the Oberhausen International Short Film Festival.

He is a member of the editorial board of the magazine Caimán. Cuadernos de cine, and has published articles in various media outlets, including the newspapers El Confidencial and El Español, and the magazines El Cultural and Archivos de la Filmoteca. He has also contributed to numerous books.

He is a lecturer at Camilo José Cela University (Madrid) and at ECAM, the Madrid Regional Government’s School of Cinematography and Audiovisual Arts.

Anne Morin (Rouen, France, 1973) is a graduate of the École Nationale de Photographie d’Arles and the École Supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Montpellier. Morin works for the revaluation and greater visibility of artists and photographers.She has curated many exhibitions of prestigious photographers and artists such as Berenice Abbott, Antonio Lopez, Vivian Maier, Robert Doisneau, Jessica Lange, Jacques Henri Lartigue, Sandro Miller, Pentti Sammallahti, and Margaret Watkins, among others. From time to time she also reinvents herself as a publisher of photography books, and edited books such as Antonio Lopez, Visionary Writing, Margaret Watkins Black Light, or Paul Alexandre Slowness.
