HU /هُو Dance as if No One Were Watching You is an installation conceived specifically for the Museo Reina Sofía by filmmaker Oliver Laxe (1982), which is being presented at Tabakalera in a new spatial arrangement.

\n\n

This project is linked to the creative process of the film Sirāt (Jury Grand Prix, Cannes 2025). While the Islamic term sirāt designates the bridge that crosses over hell toward paradise, in Arabic HU /هُو refers to the primordial sonic manifestation of the deity. The subtitle of the piece comes from a verse by Rūmī (1207–1273), the Persian mystic and scholar whose work explored transcendence and the dissolution of the self into the divine through music, dance, poetry and prayer. In HU /هُو we enter a territory where the search for transcendence is grounded in the immanence of the dancing, remembering body and in the appearance of the sacred within natural, architectural and sonic landscapes.

\n\n

The installation consists of a pyramid of loudspeakers drawn from the rave milieu rises in the space, emitting a sustained vibration devoid of melodic variation, alongsidethree projections depicting desert landscapes governed by an implacable sun, inhabited by temples and loudspeakers among which human figures dance. Filmed a decade ago in Iran, these architectures were built according to sacred patterns and proportions intended to make perceptible the threshold between the material world and the subtle one. The sound work by Kangding Ray approaches, through the structural materiality of sound itself, its mystery and its inherent immateriality.

\n\n

Through fades and superimpositions, HU /هُو constructs a visual grammar that accentuates the spectral condition of the image and evokes a physical, sensory and synaesthetic experience that seeks to reenchant the world.

Born in Paris in 1982, Oliver Laxe is the son of Galician immigrants. When he was 6, his family returned to Galicia, in northwestern Spain. After finishing his studies in Media Studies, he moved to Tangier, Morocco, where he self-produced and filmed Todos vós sodes capitáns, a film that won him the FIPRESCI Award at the 2010 Cannes Directors' Fortnight. In 2016, he won the Grand Prize at the Semaine de la Critique in Cannes for Mimosas, filmed in the Atlas Mountains. After returning to Galicia, he filmed O que arde in the heart of the Os Ancares mountains, a film that won him the Jury Prize in the Un Certain Regard section at the Cannes Film Festival in 2019. Fifteen years after its first premiere in Cannes and after having premiered and won awards in all sections, Oliver achieved his first In Competition appearance with Sirât, filmed in the Sahara Desert.

Sound artist, independent researcher, and occasional curator.

\n\n

Nieto’s research focuses on the study of the various sociocultural and political aspects inherent in the act of listening. He works with field recordings, transforming them into a radical phonographic practice and theory. He understands the act of listening as a political act for artistic creation and the creation of specific sound situations, aiming to give rise to critical thinking. 

\n\n

His work is based on the study of the act of listening as a gesture for contemporary artistic creation, showcasing its sociocultural and political aspects and questioning its ethical and aesthetic limits. He is currently researching the relationship between music, sound, and the act of listening with existential finitude, impermanence, and death. 

\n\n

He teaches “Deep Listening and Soundscape Recording” in the Master in Sound Art at the University of Barcelona.

Born in Paris in 1982, Oliver Laxe is the son of Galician immigrants. When he was 6, his family returned to Galicia, in northwestern Spain. After finishing his studies in Media Studies, he moved to Tangier, Morocco, where he self-produced and filmed Todos vós sodes capitáns, a film that won him the FIPRESCI Award at the 2010 Cannes Directors' Fortnight. In 2016, he won the Grand Prize at the Semaine de la Critique in Cannes for Mimosas, filmed in the Atlas Mountains. After returning to Galicia, he filmed O que arde in the heart of the Os Ancares mountains, a film that won him the Jury Prize in the Un Certain Regard section at the Cannes Film Festival in 2019. Fifteen years after its first premiere in Cannes and after having premiered and won awards in all sections, Oliver achieved his first In Competition appearance with Sirât, filmed in the Sahara Desert.

While the Islamic term sirāt designates the bridge that crosses over hell toward paradise, in Arabic HU /هُو refers to the primordial sonic manifestation of the deity. The subtitle of the piece comes from a verse by Rūmī (1207–1273), the Persian mystic and scholar whose work explored transcendence and the dissolution of the self into the divine through music, dance, poetry and prayer. In HU /هُو we enter a territory where the search for transcendence is grounded in the immanence of the dancing, remembering body and in the appearance of the sacred within natural, architectural and sonic landscapes.The installation consists of a pyramid of loudspeakers drawn from the rave milieu rises in the space, emitting a sustained vibration devoid of melodic variation, alongsidethree projections depicting desert landscapes governed by an implacable sun, inhabited by temples and loudspeakers among which human figures dance. Filmed a decade ago in Iran, these architectures were built according to sacred patterns and proportions intended to make perceptible the threshold between the material world and the subtle one.
