Human Library, or Biblioteca Humana, is a project that was founded in Copenhagen in 1993. It is a movement that seeks to foster dialogue and understanding through the exchange of knowledge and experiences.

\n\n

In this session, organised in collaboration with Impact Hub Donostia, we explored the experiences of people who, for different reasons, had to leave their place of origin and build a new life elsewhere.

\n\n

Some were driven by conflict, crises or circumstances that directly affected their living conditions; others moved for work, family, study or health-related reasons. In every case, there was a turning point, a decisive factor that prompted the change and led them to embark on the journey of starting over far from home.

\n\n

Through their stories, we learnt about the challenges, lessons, sacrifices, discoveries and opportunities that form part of every integration process. These unique stories help us better understand the complexity of migration from a human, personal and authentic perspective.

\n\n

These were the ‘books’ who shared their life experiences:

\n\n

Norexis Orellana, a 49-year-old Venezuelan woman who has made her home in Andoain. A series of difficult decisions led her to cross different borders and seek opportunities in several countries before eventually arriving in the Basque Country. Her story highlights the importance of support networks.

\n\n

Pri Dos Santos, a young Donostia resident born in Brazil. Arriving in a country, language and society she did not know, she experienced feelings of loneliness and isolation for many years. However, thanks to the people she calls her ‘angels’, she has been able to build a new life here.

\n\n

Karla Sánchez, a 41-year-old woman from Nicaragua. She migrated at a time of great political and social instability, leaving behind her work as an educator, her three children and the place where she was born. She took on physically demanding jobs in poor working conditions, but with the support of other migrant women like herself, she managed to settle in Arrasate. Displacement also shapes the ways in which relationships are built.

\n\n

Salah Sabbari, a 24-year-old Moroccan man living in Tolosa. At a very young age, he had to leave home in search of an income to help support his family. His journey was long, cold, uncertain and marked by violence. He often feels the weight of prejudice for being young, a migrant and Moroccan, but he has also encountered great solidarity. Salah remains determined and continues to work hard in pursuit of a better life.

\n\n

Shazia Mayyam, a Pakistani teacher living in Oñati. She has always been curious and, after leaving her village, felt a desire to discover the world. When she encountered the Basque Country, she became eager to learn more about its culture, language and way of life. She has remained here ever since, questioning both her own prejudices and those of others.

\n\n

Mamadou Sarr, who came from Senegal to Oiartzun. He left his place of birth in search of better living conditions. The early years were difficult, particularly while he was in an irregular administrative situation. He now works as a carpenter, speaks Basque and has discovered a passion for rowing, which connects him to his new community. He lives close to his relatives, one of his main sources of support, between Oarsoaldea and Ondarru.

It is a movement that seeks to foster dialogue and understanding through the exchange of knowledge and experiences.In this session, organised in collaboration with Impact Hub Donostia, we explored the experiences of people who, for different reasons, had to leave their place of origin and build a new life elsewhere.Some were driven by conflict, crises or circumstances that directly affected their living conditions; others moved for work, family, study or health-related reasons. In every case, there was a turning point, a decisive factor that prompted the change and led them to embark on the journey of starting over far from home.Through their stories, we learnt about the challenges, lessons, sacrifices, discoveries and opportunities that form part of every integration process. These unique stories help us better understand the complexity of migration from a human, personal and authentic perspective.These were the ‘books’ who shared their life experiences:Norexis Orellana, a 49-year-old Venezuelan woman who has made her home in Andoain. A series of difficult decisions led her to cross different borders and seek opportunities in several countries before eventually arriving in the Basque Country. Her story highlights the importance of support networks.Pri Dos Santos, a young Donostia resident born in Brazil. Arriving in a country, language and society she did not know, she experienced feelings of loneliness and isolation for many years. However, thanks to the people she calls her ‘angels’, she has been able to build a new life here.Karla Sánchez, a 41-year-old woman from Nicaragua. She migrated at a time of great political and social instability, leaving behind her work as an educator, her three children and the place where she was born. She took on physically demanding jobs in poor working conditions, but with the support of other migrant women like herself, she managed to settle in Arrasate. Displacement also shapes the ways in which relationships are built.Salah Sabbari, a 24-year-old Moroccan man living in Tolosa. At a very young age, he had to leave home in search of an income to help support his family. His journey was long, cold, uncertain and marked by violence. He often feels the weight of prejudice for being young, a migrant and Moroccan, but he has also encountered great solidarity. Salah remains determined and continues to work hard in pursuit of a better life.Shazia Mayyam, a Pakistani teacher living in Oñati. She has always been curious and, after leaving her village, felt a desire to discover the world. When she encountered the Basque Country, she became eager to learn more about its culture, language and way of life. She has remained here ever since, questioning both her own prejudices and those of others.Mamadou Sarr, who came from Senegal to Oiartzun. He left his place of birth in search of better living conditions. The early years were difficult, particularly while he was in an irregular administrative situation. He now works as a carpenter, speaks Basque and has discovered a passion for rowing, which connects him to his new community.
