\n\nIra Sachs is one of the most significant directors in contemporary American queer independent cinema. In this regard, his role as founder of Queer|Art, a non-profit cultural organisation based in New York that has been dedicated to showcasing and supporting new generations of LGBTQ+ artists since 2009, is particularly noteworthy.
\n\nIra Sachs’s cinema is personal (though not autobiographical) and intimate and, while his films differ, they share common elements: the exploration of complex human relationships and ambiguous characters, the importance of everyday life, an interest in queer cultural genealogies and the significance of spaces.
\n\nWith regard to spaces, on the one hand, the importance of flats, rooms and apartments stands out, but the role of the city of Memphis in The Delta (1996) is also worth mentioning and, above all, New York in films such as Keep the Lights On (2012), Love Is Strange (2014) or Little Men (2016). The city is not merely a setting where stories unfold, but rather, cities themselves shape and influence affective relationships.
\n\nBodies are also very important in Ira Sachs’s films. Bodies that desire, draw near and pull away. Bodies that build, sustain or throw relationships into crisis. Summer may well be the best time to discover this director’s films, as the unhurried pace of the season allows us to carefully observe the subtlest details of the intimacy that constructs and inhabits a universe composed of affects, encounters and transformations.
\n\nThe Man I Love, his latest film, recently premiered as part of the Official Selection at the Cannes Film Festival. On 4 July, we will have the good fortune to welcome him to Tabakalera to present the film that opens this retrospective, his penultimate film: Peter Hujar’s Day (2025).

She works as an editor, teacher and archivist. From an early age her training was in the field of arts and social sciences. She studied at the Escuela Nacional de Experimentación y Realización Cinematográfica (ENERC), in Buenos Aires, Argentina and more recently at the Elias Querejeta Zine Eskola, in Donostia, Basque Country.
\nAs an editor, she has participated in multiple documentary projects, as well as experimental projects in collaboration with contemporary Argentinean artists.
\nIn 2019 she founded a documentary filmmaking workshop, ‘La Paloma’ in a Penitentiary Unit in the province of Buenos Aires.
\nIn 2024 she carried out a Laboratory of memories and archives, in conjunction with the Malen Etxea Association, in Zumaia, as part of her TFM.
\nShe is also involved in Argentinean film research and preservation projects and is part of the research collective Operación Retorno.
Lidia is raised by a queer family banished to the outskirts of a mining town. They are accused of causing a mysterious disease that's starting to spread.
