Sistema de reconocimiento afectivo fallido is an artistic research project that critically examines how artificial vision systems analyse and categorise complex feelings such as emotions. The project does not seek to develop a “more empathetic” artificial intelligence or to humanise technology, but to explicitly examine the limits, errors, and fictions that emerge when a machine is asked to recognise emotions. The proposal is based on a central question: What does an artificial vision system really understand by “emotion” and what discourse does it produce when required to identify it?

The project proposes a deliberate shift away from more affirmative or restorative approaches to artificial intelligence. Instead of symbolically repurposing monitoring systems to “detect feelings,” the proposal is to analyse what happens when these systems fail in their attempt to recognise that which, by definition, cannot be fully formalised. Failure, error, and contradiction are not technical problems to be corrected here, but instead the conceptual and productive core of the project.

From a technical point of view, these systems work with computerised vision tools —body detection, posture analysis, proximity between bodies, gaze direction— combined with classification and grouping processes using machine learning. The systems do not access emotions as lived experiences, but instead they operate from indirect indicators: spatial distances, symmetries, detectable contact, and statistical correlations from previous datasets. The project focuses precisely on highlighting the difference between what the system calculates and what we culturally understand as emotion, doing so through live installations in which visitors can see the internal readings and limitations in real time as the system analyses the situations presented.

Alejandra Bueno de Santiago (Vitoria-Gasteiz, 1987) is a visual artist, researcher, and cultural manager. She holds a Fine Arts Degree from the University of the Basque Country (EHU) and a Master in Visual Arts and Multimedia and PhD in Art, Production, and Research from the EHU. Since 2015, she has been a teaching and research staff member at different universities in Ecuador and Spain, and she currently works at EUNEIZ University. In 2022, she was selected by the Guggenheim Museum for a residency in New York, and in 2023 she received the UnEtxea award for her audiovisual work EZOHIKOAK, selected for the Malaga Film Festival, among others. Since 2023, she has been carrying out the FEMIAS project, an investigation on AI with a gender focus which has received the CAF Elhuyar Award and different creation grants, such as LORALDIA. She recently inaugurated the exhibition Can Artificial Intelligence be feminist? at the Montehermoso Cultural Centre.

The project does not seek to develop a “more empathetic” artificial intelligence or to humanise technology, but to explicitly examine the limits, errors, and fictions that emerge when a machine is asked to recognise emotions. The proposal is based on a central question: What does an artificial vision system really understand by “emotion” and what discourse does it produce when required to identify it?The project proposes a deliberate shift away from more affirmative or restorative approaches to artificial intelligence. Instead of symbolically repurposing monitoring systems to “detect feelings,” the proposal is to analyse what happens when these systems fail in their attempt to recognise that which, by definition, cannot be fully formalised. Failure, error, and contradiction are not technical problems to be corrected here, but instead the conceptual and productive core of the project.From a technical point of view, these systems work with computerised vision tools —body detection, posture analysis, proximity between bodies, gaze direction— combined with classification and grouping processes using machine learning. The systems do not access emotions as lived experiences, but instead they operate from indirect indicators: spatial distances, symmetries, detectable contact, and statistical correlations from previous datasets.
