Coordinated by choreographer Olatz de Andrés, the cycle aims to promote the creation of contemporary dance while serving as a platform for showcasing this artistic discipline. In the words of its coordinator: “Each year, Tabakalera Dantzan takes another step towards establishing itself as a context that embraces the broad universe of contemporary and research-based dance. It offers audiences the opportunity to discover the work of artists pursuing singular creative paths. It creates a meaningful place for dance within the San Sebastián Musical Fortnight, unfolding through its direct relationship with music, sound and architectural space, and placing dance beyond its usual theatrical setting.”
\n\n
This year, choreographer Ion Munduate takes part in the creative residency jointly supported by Tabakalera and the San Sebastián Musical Fortnight as part of Tabakalera Dantzan. The residency offers established artists with long-standing practices the opportunity to develop new work, giving them carte blanche to share their current artistic research. Following several days of work at Tabakalera alongside Blanca Calvo—a long-time collaborator of Munduate—and pianist Iñar Sastre, the choreographer will present Hafuura on 11 August. The piece explores the idea that everything can ultimately be resolved through essences. As Munduate writes: “Something becomes something else because it is in motion, because it exists between an immediately preceding moment and an immediately following one.”
\n\n
On 13 August, Paula Quintana will present Atlas de Anatomía, a work in which the voice of a choir functions as another body, creating a space between tradition and contemporaneity. It is a polyphony of knowledge and a multifaceted, hybrid identity as a new place from which to exist, where flamenco—bastard in origin—and Latin culture—impure by nature—occupy their own place within a mosaic of identities.
\n\n
On 14 August, Lorena Nogal, recipient of the 2024 National Dance Award, will guide audiences through several spaces at Tabakalera with PICASSa. Inspired by Pablo Picasso’s visual fragmentation and ruptures, the work unfolds across three locations reflecting three stages of the artist’s career. It is a reflection on how we perceive and reshape reality, both physically and emotionally, offering an immersive experience that connects directly with Cubist aesthetics and its invitation to see the world from multiple perspectives. The artistic experience takes shape in the shared space between the work and its audience. Becoming an audience member—and exploring what an artistic creation awakens in us—becomes a living act in itself.
\n\n
Tickets are available through the San Sebastián Musical Fortnight website and at the Kursaal and Victoria Eugenia Theatre box offices. If tickets remain, they can also be purchased at Tabakalera before each event (cash payments only).
\n\n
This year's Tabakalera Dantzan programme:
\n\n
Ion Munduate, Hafuura — 11 August, 7.30 pm
\n\n
Hafuura—meaning spirit, air or breath in Oromo—is a term that leads us back to what is essential. The project is an attempt to work within an analogue sense of time, as though we were inside an hourglass, moving across sand that continually reshapes the surface beneath our feet. Through voice, body, movement, sound and image, and from a singular present sustained by a shared breath, the work explores the idea that everything can be resolved through the essences that define the nature of things and their relationships.
\n\n
Paula Quintana, Atlas de Anatomía — 13 August, 7.30 pm
\n\n
Atlas de Anatomía is the female body in which inherited traditions and learned patterns coexist alongside organs and bodily fluids. It is an island body, rooted in the Canary Islands, shaped by Afro-Latin influences, Andalusian heritage and a European present. A hybrid, mixed-race body in every sense, questioning what it has learned it is supposed to be and the place it is expected to occupy, while embracing the responsibility of embodying a diverse and complex identity eager to discover new ways of being and relating.
\n\n
Lorena Nogal, PICASSa — 14 August, 5.00 pm & 7.00 pm – Various spaces (starting point: Plaza)
\n\n
Drawing inspiration from Picasso’s visual ruptures, PICASSa explores detachment, the traces left by the ephemeral and the search for new forms of expression through an exercise in decontextualising and transforming the museum space. Closely connected to Cubism, the work invites audiences to rethink reality from multiple perspectives, forging new relationships between body, imagination and spectator in a creative journey beyond the conventional boundaries of theatre.
\n\n

"},"path":{"alias":"/tabakalera-dantzan-dance-beyond-its-traditional-conventional-stage","langcode":"en"},"fecha":"2026-08-04","relationships":{"categoria":[],"media":[{"internal":{"type":"media__image"},"relationships":{"imgSrc":{"uri":{"url":"/sites/default/files/2026-08/20260804_106_tbk_quincena_0.jpg"},"sizes":[{"xl":null,"l":null,"m":null,"s":null,"rrss_l":null,"rrss_s":null},{"xl":null,"l":null,"m":null,"s":null,"rrss_l":null,"rrss_s":null},{"xl":"https://cms.tabakalera.eus/sites/default/files/styles/breakpoint_1920/public/2026-08/20260804_106_tbk_quincena_0.jpg?itok=Qn4EXdH3","l":null,"m":null,"s":null,"rrss_l":null,"rrss_s":null},{"xl":null,"l":"https://cms.tabakalera.eus/sites/default/files/styles/breakpoint_31360/public/2026-08/20260804_106_tbk_quincena_0.jpg?itok=DJnL1R2e","m":null,"s":null,"rrss_l":null,"rrss_s":null},{"xl":null,"l":null,"m":null,"s":"https://cms.tabakalera.eus/sites/default/files/styles/breakpoint_376/public/2026-08/20260804_106_tbk_quincena_0.jpg?itok=cChfgeyQ","rrss_l":null,"rrss_s":null},{"xl":null,"l":null,"m":"https://cms.tabakalera.eus/sites/default/files/styles/breakpoint_769/public/2026-08/20260804_106_tbk_quincena_0.jpg?itok=DpAkbAtF","s":null,"rrss_l":null,"rrss_s":null},{"xl":null,"l":null,"m":null,"s":null,"rrss_l":null,"rrss_s":null},{"xl":null,"l":null,"m":null,"s":null,"rrss_l":null,"rrss_s":null},{"xl":null,"l":null,"m":null,"s":null,"rrss_l":null,"rrss_s":null},{"xl":null,"l":null,"m":null,"s":null,"rrss_l":"https://cms.tabakalera.eus/sites/default/files/styles/thumb_rrss_large/public/2026-08/20260804_106_tbk_quincena_0.jpg?itok=I44gLyOR","rrss_s":null},{"xl":null,"l":null,"m":null,"s":null,"rrss_l":null,"rrss_s":"https://cms.tabakalera.eus/sites/default/files/styles/thumb_rrss_small/public/2026-08/20260804_106_tbk_quincena_0.jpg?itok=Pht3OQUj"}]}},"imgMetas":{"alt":""}}]}}},"pageContext":{"id":"94711f20-7e92-5600-951a-940527de4b21","nodeId":13968,"langcode":"en","nodeMetadata":{"title":"Tabakalera Dantzan: dance beyond its traditional the conventional stage | Tabakalera","description":"Several spaces throughout Tabakalera will host the seventh edition of Tabakalera Dantzan, a programme jointly organised by the San Sebastián Music Festival and Tabakalera, International Centre for Contemporary Culture."},"yesterday":"2026-08-03","today":"2026-08-05"}},"staticQueryHashes":["1409045280","1472977592","1549843337","1600800028","1852898869","2684269349","2736526504","3122408510","3305536543","3493939040","3649515864","4040268713","63159454","847920557"]}
