Tabakalera takes a further step in its commitment to open access to cultural knowledge by linking the Medialab catalogue with Wikidata, a free and collaborative database that powers projects such as Wikipedia.

This innovative initiative makes authors, creators, and other agents connected to the fields in which the International Centre for Contemporary Culture works more visible and accessible on a global scale. At the same time, it enables anyone accessing the Medialab catalogue to quickly and easily obtain richer and more comprehensive information.

\n\n

This information is displayed in the Medialab catalogue through WikiInfo, a tool that automatically connects catalogue records with Wikidata and enriches bibliographic information with open and up-to-date data. As a result, users can see this enriched content directly within each bibliographic record, including a dedicated information panel with biographical data, images, links to other sources, and connections to Wikipedia articles. Additionally, as a multilingual platform (Basque, Spanish, and English), it facilitates access to information in different languages, expanding its global reach.

Thanks to this direct connection, catalogue content is expanded with cultural and biographical context.

\n\n

Currently, of the 86,362 authority records in the catalogue, 25,867 have already been linked to Wikidata.

A constantly evolving catalogue

\n\n

WikiInfo acts as a bridge between the local Medialab Tabakalera catalogue and the wider ecosystem of linked open data.

\n\n

This means that if an institution improves a record in Wikidata—ensuring that the shared information is accurate, precise, and up to date, for example by completing biographical data—those changes are automatically reflected in the catalogue.

\n\n

In this way, the catalogue evolves from a closed system into a dynamic and collaborative environment.

\n\n

With this initiative, Medialab Tabakalera positions itself as an active agent in the digital transformation of the cultural sector, embracing tools that promote transparency, innovation, and collaboration, and contributing to the collective construction of knowledge.

This milestone strengthens Medialab Tabakalera’s strategy to modernise its catalogue and reinforces its commitment to open and structured data.
