This morning, First Vice-Lehendakari and Minister for Culture and Language Policy, Ibone Bengoetxea, officially opened the cultural programme I Baschi alla Biennale 1976/2026, which will take place in Venice until 8 May. In this way, the Basque Country will have a prominent presence within the artistic context of the Biennale. Developed collaboratively by the Basque Government, the Etxepare Basque Institute, Artium Museoa and Ca’ Foscari University of Venice, the programme commemorates the 50th anniversary of the participation of Basque artists in the 1976 Venice Biennale, creating a dialogue between historical memory and contemporary artistic creation.

The programme is structured around three main strands: an academic symposium, a case study presented in exhibition format, and a programme of performances. Activities are taking place across various venues in Venice, including the Auditorium Santa Margherita and Palazzo Contarini della Porta di Ferro. A number of performances are also being presented, including Irrintzi Repetición by Itziar Okariz and Tripak Tokitik by the Tripak collective — works that combine body, voice and space.

Within this context, Tabakalera is also present, reinforcing its role in the international promotion of Basque contemporary creation. The gathering has brought together leading figures from the Basque cultural sphere and, among the participants, Edurne Ormazabal, General Director of Tabakalera, and Clara Montero, Cultural Director, have travelled to Venice to underline the organisation’s commitment to international artistic contexts.
