To Take Omens Before Action is intended to explore the audiovisual possibilities of the sky-scape inspired by the observational practice of the Roman Augurs –priests-observers who take omens (“the inauguration“) looking up and inspecting the sky from specific locations. I aim to seek the connections between the latter and certain aspects from contemporary culture and the film medium. During the residency I will locate this research on different spots of the Scottish geography. The investigation objectifies into two lines of action: an experimental essay film and an audiovisual environment conceived for an exhibition arrangement.

His practice is focused on films, actions, spatial proposals and publications. His work has been scheduled at the Rotterdam, Pesaro or Vila do Conde festivals; within the framework of Light Field, (S8) Mostra de cinema periférico, Nomadica, San Francisco Cinematheque, WIELS, FRACTO, BIAU XI, Rose Bruford College of Theatre and Performance, INJUVE or BilbaoArte; and alongside the work by Esperanza Collado at Image Forum or the Taipei Contemporary Art Center. In late 2020, with the support of the Project Bank of the Institute of Culture and Arts of Sevilla, he promoted the “kino~okno” initiative, a proposal focused on the mechanical, photochemical and optical roots of film. He recently formed the Las Synergys collective with Paula Guerrero, through which they investigate the convergence of live cinematographic and musical experiences.

\n\nHis work is based on the study of the act of listening as a gesture for contemporary artistic creation, showcasing its sociocultural and political aspects and questioning its ethical and aesthetic limits. He is currently researching the relationship between music, sound, and the act of listening with existential finitude, impermanence, and death.
\n\nHe teaches “Deep Listening and Soundscape Recording” in the Master in Sound Art at the University of Barcelona.

When he was 6, his family returned to Galicia, in northwestern Spain. After finishing his studies in Media Studies, he moved to Tangier, Morocco, where he self-produced and filmed Todos vós sodes capitáns, a film that won him the FIPRESCI Award at the 2010 Cannes Directors' Fortnight. In 2016, he won the Grand Prize at the Semaine de la Critique in Cannes for Mimosas, filmed in the Atlas Mountains. After returning to Galicia, he filmed O que arde in the heart of the Os Ancares mountains, a film that won him the Jury Prize in the Un Certain Regard section at the Cannes Film Festival in 2019. Fifteen years after its first premiere in Cannes and after having premiered and won awards in all sections, Oliver achieved his first In Competition appearance with Sirât, filmed in the Sahara Desert.

\n\nDebris has been writing, moving and making for 20 years, she’s performed in over 30 countries, designed academic poetry modules at The University of Nottingham and raised over £300K with her community interest company The Mouthy Poets where she taught thousands of young people from Nottingham to across the world.
\n\nDebris’ debut grime-musical POET IN DA CORNER (Royal Court) toured nationally in 2020. Her play MY BROTHER’S A GENIUS (Theatre Centre, Theatre Sheffield, National Youth Theatre) toured schools and theatres nationally in spring 2026. And her co-adaption of CYRANO DE BERGERAC (Royal Shakespeare Company) alongside Simon Evans, starring Adrian Lester will transfer to London’s West End (Noël Coward Theatre) this summer after a sell out 5* run at the RSC.
\n\nDebris is currently completing a fully funded practice-based PhD studentship titled ‘The Write to Rave’ on the intersection between grime, storytelling and neurodivergence at Oxford
\nBrookes University.
When Debris isn’t writing, creating or studying she can be found dancing at carnivals, parties and prides around the world for the likes of Red Bull Music Academy, The Heatwave and sometimes, just for fun.
