Walker is an installation that features three audiovisual works and a graphic work, conceived for Tabakalera by the Taiwanese filmmaker Tsai Ming-Liang.

Walker is an installation that features three audiovisual works  conceived specifically for Tabakalera by the acclaimed Taiwanese filmmaker Tsai Ming-Liang (Sarawak, Malaysia, 1957). The project’s origins date back to 2011, when the director collaborated with the actor Lee Kang-Sheng on the play Only You. Fascinated by a sequence in which the actor walked with extreme slowness, Tsai decided to transpose that bodily rhythm onto the screen, transforming the body into an observer that moves through different places around the world. 

\n\n

For the filmmaker, this pursuit of slowness connects with the figure of the Chinese monk Xuanzang, who during the Tang dynasty (between the 7th and 10th centuries), a period regarded as the Golden Age of Chinese civilisation, travelled thousands of kilometres to India in search of Buddhist scriptures. Lee Kang-Sheng embodies a contemporary version of this monk: with a shaved head, bare feet and a red robe, the character walks through the urban landscape in an exercise in radical introspection.

\n\n

Since 2012, the Walker series has grown to comprise twelve films shot in ten cities, including Taipei, Hong Kong, Marseille, Tokyo, Paris, Washington DC and San Sebastian. The latest film in the series — Dust — shot in San Sebastian during the summer of 2025 in collaboration with Tabakalera, is being presented in the Zabaltegi-Tabakalera section of the 2026 San Sebastian Film Festival. This series of films is, in short, a never-ending journey, a process of deep observation that restores the lost value of stillness to the world.

\n\n

Through the three works in this series selected for gallery display —No Form (2012), Walker (2012) and Journey to the West (2014)—Tsai Ming-Liang invites us to walk the streets of Hong Kong, Taipei and Marseille through a restrained perspective. By making slowness a virtue, the filmmaker reveals a different way of approaching life and observing the environment around us.

This project is part of Tabakalera’s exhibition programme dedicated to exploring the intersection between contemporary art and cinema.

Tsai Ming-Liang was born in Malaysia in 1957. He premiered his debut feature, Rebels of the Neon God, at the Berlinale in 1992. His sophomore film, Vive L’ amour (1994), won the Golden Lion award at the Venice Film Festival, while The River (1996) received the Jury Award at Berlin, thus solidifying his status as one of contemporary cinema’s leading filmmakers. 

\n\n

In 2009, Face became the first film commissioned and included as part of the collection of the Louvre Museum’s Le Louvre s'offre aux cineastes programme. In 2023, Tsai was awarded with the Pardo Alla Carriera (Leopard of Honour) at the Locarno Film Festival for his distinguished career in cinema. 

\n\n

In recent years, the filmmaker has also received attention within the art world, having been invited to participate in various art exhibitions and festivals, and for proposing such aesthetic ideas as the ‘Hand-sculpted Cinema’ and ‘The removal of industrial processes from art making’. In 2012, he began his Slow Walk series and has since completed twelve short films, which have been screened at art festivals and galleries around the world.

Aside from cinema, he continuously develops stage plays and art exhibitions. The stage play The Monk from Tang Dynasty has toured for a decade since 2014. A Quest, an exhibition in cooperation with Centre Pompidou marked a milestone in the director’s artistic career. Back in Taiwan, he has actively promoted the concept of ‘The Art Museum as Cinema’ and  ‘The Author’s Intended Way of Viewing’, introducing new film-watching modes as a way to balance the overly commercialised film market. 

\n\n

Tsai Ming-Liang’s work has established one of the most distinctive bodies of practice in contemporary culture, presenting life in its truest form.

Sound artist, independent researcher, and occasional curator.

\n\n

Nieto’s research focuses on the study of the various sociocultural and political aspects inherent in the act of listening. He works with field recordings, transforming them into a radical phonographic practice and theory. He understands the act of listening as a political act for artistic creation and the creation of specific sound situations, aiming to give rise to critical thinking. 

\n\n

His work is based on the study of the act of listening as a gesture for contemporary artistic creation, showcasing its sociocultural and political aspects and questioning its ethical and aesthetic limits. He is currently researching the relationship between music, sound, and the act of listening with existential finitude, impermanence, and death. 

\n\n

He teaches “Deep Listening and Soundscape Recording” in the Master in Sound Art at the University of Barcelona.

Born in Paris in 1982, Oliver Laxe is the son of Galician emigrants. When he was six years old, his family returned to Galicia. After studying film in Barcelona, he moved to Tangier, Morocco, where he self-produced and shot Todos vós sodes capitáns [You All Are Captains], which won the FIPRESCI Prize at the Cannes Directors’ Fortnight in 2010.

\n\n

In 2016, he received the Grand Prix at the Cannes Critics’ Week for Mimosas, shot in the Atlas Mountains. After returning to Galicia, he directed O que arde [Fire Will Come], filmed in the heart of the Ancares, which won the Jury Prize in the Un Certain Regard section at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival. Fifteen years after his first premiere at Cannes, and having screened films and won awards in all its sections, Laxe made his Competition debut in 2025 with Sirāt. The film, which won the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival, has cemented its international success, earning widespread acclaim from both critics and the industry, as well as multiple nominations for the Academy Awards, the Golden Globes and the Goya Awards. 

\n\n

In addition to his work as a filmmaker, Laxe is a member of the Ser Association, an initiative based in Os Ancares that promotes the revitalisation of rural areas through cultural, agricultural and community development projects. He also promotes rural development strategies linked to heritage restoration and repopulation, working closely with local development groups.

Debris Stevenson is a playwright, grime-poet, multi-disciplinary artist, neurodivergent academic and professional raver whose work explores the intersectional, unexpected, and unjust.

\n\n

Debris has been writing, moving and making for 20 years, she’s performed in over 30 countries, designed academic poetry modules at The University of Nottingham and raised over £300K with her community interest company The Mouthy Poets where she taught thousands of young people from Nottingham to across the world. 

\n\n

Debris’ debut grime-musical POET IN DA CORNER (Royal Court) toured nationally in 2020. Her play MY BROTHER’S A GENIUS (Theatre Centre, Theatre Sheffield, National Youth Theatre) toured schools and theatres nationally in spring 2026. And her co-adaption of CYRANO DE BERGERAC (Royal Shakespeare Company) alongside Simon Evans, starring Adrian Lester will transfer to London’s West End (Noël Coward Theatre) this summer after a sell out 5* run at the RSC.

Debris is currently completing a fully funded practice-based PhD studentship titled ‘The Write to Rave’ on the intersection between grime, storytelling and neurodivergence at Oxford
\nBrookes University. 

\n\n

When Debris isn’t writing, creating or studying she can be found dancing at carnivals, parties and prides around the world for the likes of Red Bull Music Academy, The Heatwave and sometimes, just for fun.

The project’s origins date back to 2011, when the director collaborated with the actor Lee Kang-Sheng on the play Only You. Fascinated by a sequence in which the actor walked with extreme slowness, Tsai decided to transpose that bodily rhythm onto the screen, transforming the body into an observer that moves through different places around the world. For the filmmaker, this pursuit of slowness connects with the figure of the Chinese monk Xuanzang, who during the Tang dynasty (between the 7th and 10th centuries), a period regarded as the Golden Age of Chinese civilisation, travelled thousands of kilometres to India in search of Buddhist scriptures. Lee Kang-Sheng embodies a contemporary version of this monk: with a shaved head, bare feet and a red robe, the character walks through the urban landscape in an exercise in radical introspection.Since 2012, the Walker series has grown to comprise twelve films shot in ten cities, including Taipei, Hong Kong, Marseille, Tokyo, Paris, Washington DC and San Sebastian. The latest film in the series, shot in San Sebastian during the summer of 2025 in collaboration with Tabakalera, is being presented in the Zabaltegi-Tabakalera section of the 2026 San Sebastian Film Festival. This series of films is, in short, a never-ending journey, a process of deep observation that restores the lost value of stillness to the world.Through the three works in this series selected for gallery display —Walker (2012), No Form (2012) and Journey to the West (2013)—Tsai Ming-Liang invites us to walk the streets of Hong Kong, Taipei and Marseille through a restrained perspective.
