In 1985, Japanese cult filmmaker Sogo Ishii accompanied the West-Berlin post-punk and industrial band Einstürzende Neubauten while touring Japan on the occasion of their newly released album 1/2 Mensch.
This collaboration resulted in anything but a conventional concert film: an hour-long audiovisual meditation on the human capacity for destruction and creative renewal amidst contemporary urban ruins. Partly filmed in a soon-to-be-demolished ironworks building, the music appears to rise out of the abandoned detritus of concrete and machinery.
Ishii combines experimental techniques with elaborate choreography and uniquely Japanese elements. One of the highlights of the film is the interpretation of the song Z.N.S. by the legendary butoh group Byakko-Sha.
These sessions fall within the Zin Ex. Body and Architecture exhibition’s programme of activities.
*PLEASE NOTE: This session is part of a double event: At 18:00 the film 1/2 Mensch will be screened, followed by the concert by Rrucculla at 19:00. Both events will be accessible with a single ticket.
