Americium, Lisa Rave and Erik Blinderman, 2017, 45’
Erik Blinderman and Lisa Rave created Whole Wall Films in 2013, a production company which works with photography and film between Los Angeles and Berlin.
During their residency in Tabakalera, they worked in the movie Americium. The title refers to a radioactive element in the periodic table. Americium addresses the contamination of sacred lands and the spiritual abandonment of an American landscape. The film is about the controversial long-term nuclear storage facility at Yucca Mountain. It uses portraits of local people and communities to explore the conflicting ideologies and fantasies of the American West. It is a search for what is invisible but also is embedded in the landscape, a meditation on what is simultaneously real and imagined. The project is the result of several years of research on the subject.
